Selma, Alabama – Vice President Kamala Harris made a passionate plea for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing the urgent need to address the immense suffering resulting from the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Speaking at the commemorations for the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Selma, Harris called for a temporary halt in hostilities for at least the next six weeks.
Harris’s statement marks a significant stance by a member of the Biden administration on the pressing issue of Gaza. The conflict, which has lasted five months, began when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel, resulting in widespread devastation and loss of life on both sides.
During her speech in Alabama, Harris described the situation in Gaza as a “humanitarian catastrophe,” underscoring the critical need for increased aid flow into the region. She emphasized the importance of acting to alleviate the dire conditions faced by the people of Gaza, stating that the international community must come together to address these urgent humanitarian needs.
While acknowledging the suffering in Gaza, Harris also highlighted the ongoing threat posed by Hamas to the people of Israel, expressing the need to eliminate this threat. The Biden administration has been working towards securing a ceasefire agreement, with Israel reportedly accepting a potential six-week ceasefire, contingent on Hamas’ agreement to the terms of the deal.
Efforts to secure a ceasefire have gained momentum, with the aim of reaching an agreement before the start of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan on March 10. In addition, the U.S. has initiated airdrops of humanitarian aid into Gaza, aiming to ensure that vital supplies reach those in need and prevent looting of essential goods on the ground.
Air Force C-130 cargo planes, along with Jordan’s air force, conducted the airdrops, delivering over 38,000 meals to the coastline of Gaza. This coordinated effort sought to provide critical aid to civilians in Gaza and ease the humanitarian crisis gripping the region.
