Celine Dion Reveals Shocking Symptoms of Stiff-Person Syndrome: ‘Like Somebody is Strangling You’

Las Vegas, Nevada – Celine Dion opened up to NBC’s Hoda Kotb about the challenges she faces while singing with stiff-person syndrome, describing the experience as feeling like “somebody is strangling you.” In a recent interview on “TODAY,” Dion shared the impact of the condition on her life and career, revealing the physical toll it takes on her ability to perform.

When attempting to sing, Dion explained that she feels pressure on her larynx and pharynx, causing spasms when she tries to modulate her voice. These spasms can occur all over her body and are so severe that they have resulted in broken ribs. Dion first disclosed her diagnosis in a heartfelt Instagram video in December 2022 and has since been candid about her struggles.

The stiffness associated with stiff-person syndrome can manifest in various parts of the body, not just the throat. Dion recounted how even simple tasks like pointing her feet or cooking can trigger cramping and immobility in her hands. This rare condition affects only a small number of individuals globally, leading to rigidity in the torso and limbs, along with debilitating muscle spasms that can cause falls.

In response to her health challenges, Dion made the difficult decision to cancel her European tour in 2023, focusing on her recovery and regaining strength. Despite these setbacks, she made a surprise appearance at the Grammys in February, receiving a standing ovation while presenting the album of the year award. Throughout her journey with stiff-person syndrome, Dion has shown resilience and determination in continuing to share her music with the world.
