CHICAGO, IL — Chicago police are investigating a homicide after determining that a man was pushed from a moving CTA Red Line train during an altercation and later died on the tracks near the 69th Street station.
Police said the incident happened about 2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 7, in the first block of West 69th Street on Chicago’s South Side. Investigators said Tuesday that three people pushed the man from the moving train during an altercation. His name and age had not been released as of Tuesday evening, and police had announced no arrests.
The homicide investigation marks a significant change from the account authorities initially provided Monday. Police first said the man had jumped from the moving train. After further investigation, police said detectives determined that he had instead been pushed by three people who were involved in the onboard confrontation.
According to police, the victim fell onto the electrified third rail and became incapacitated. He was then struck by an oncoming train and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released additional details about the sequence of the altercation or what led to it.
Police have not publicly identified the three people they say were involved in pushing the victim, and officials have not released descriptions of them. Investigators also have not said whether the victim knew any of the other people involved or what may have caused the confrontation.
The incident disrupted Red Line service Monday afternoon. CTA trains were temporarily suspended between the Garfield and 95th Street stations as emergency crews and investigators responded near 69th Street. Service later resumed, with trains operating normally by Monday night.
The death occurred in the Greater Grand Crossing area along the Red Line’s South Side branch. Area One detectives are handling the homicide investigation. Police have not announced criminal charges or identified a motive, and the circumstances leading up to the altercation remain under investigation.
The case remained open as of Tuesday, with no arrests publicly reported. Authorities had not released the victim’s identity or additional information about the three people being sought in connection with the deadly encounter.
