Atlanta, Georgia – Cicadas, the small insects known for their loud buzzing sounds, hold a surprising secret that has recently caught the attention of scientists. A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reveals that cicadas expel urine in the form of jets rather than the more common droplets seen in similar insects. This unique behavior has provided researchers with a deeper understanding of fluid dynamics in these creatures.

While much attention has been devoted to the feeding habits of insects, particularly those that suck fluids, little focus has been placed on their waste elimination mechanisms. Saad Bhamla from Georgia Tech has been at the forefront of this research, challenging existing paradigms and shedding light on the importance of waste expulsion in ecological and metabolic regulation.

In a previous study, Bhamla’s team examined the glassy-winged sharpshooters, another insect species with a fascinating urination process. The study revealed that this unique urination mechanism allows sharpshooters to conserve energy more efficiently than producing a steady urine stream.

The use of “superpropulsion” in waste elimination has also been observed in other insect species, earning them nicknames like “frass-shooters,” “butt-flickers,” and “turd-hurlers.” Some insects, like skipper larvae and certain moth species, have developed specialized techniques to expel waste, showcasing the diverse strategies employed by organisms in nature.
