Coach Travis Smith Returns to Raiders: Will He Turn the Defense into Super Bowl Contenders?

HENDERSON, Nev. — The Las Vegas Raiders have announced the appointment of Travis Smith as their new defensive line coach, marking a significant addition to the team’s coaching staff.

Smith arrives in Las Vegas after a successful tenure with the Tennessee Titans, where he served as the defensive run game coordinator. In his recent role, Smith played a crucial part in elevating defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, who achieved his fourth Pro Bowl selection by leading all NFL interior linemen in multiple categories, including solo tackles, tackles for loss, and sacks.

Before joining the Titans, Smith spent three seasons as the defensive line coach for the Chicago Bears. Under his guidance, the Bears’ defense excelled, notably leading the NFL in fewest rushing yards allowed in 2023. That season, the Bears also registered a solid performance in pass-rushing, finishing with 40 sacks and a roster featuring 16 players each recording at least one sack. Smith’s coaching contributed to defensive end Montez Sweat earning a Pro Bowl nod after a standout year.

Smith’s coaching career with the Raiders spans a decade, during which he held various positions, including assistant defensive line coach and defensive quality control coach. His earlier tenure was marked by the development of standout players like Maxx Crosby, who achieved a career-high in tackles and earned his first Pro Bowl selection, alongside other significant contributors like Yannick Ngakoue.

In 2017, Smith led Oakland’s outside linebackers, where he contributed to Khalil Mack’s success in achieving 10.5 sacks and career-high tackles. Mack’s impressive performance during that season earned him a place in the Pro Bowl for the third consecutive year. Smith’s influence was evident as he coached Mack during a record-tying sack streak.

Prior to his lengthy stint with the Raiders, Smith gained valuable experience in collegiate coaching, working with both Santa Monica Junior College and the University of Colorado. His path to the NFL began at Cal Poly State University, where he not only played football but also completed his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology.

A native of Walnut Creek, California, Smith is driven by a passion for the game and a commitment to developing young athletes. He resides in the Las Vegas area with his wife, Christina, and their two children. The Raiders aim to leverage Smith’s extensive background to bolster their defensive line as they prepare for the upcoming season.
