Cockpit Chaos: Baseball Coach Filmed in Airplane Cockpit Mid-Flight – FAA Investigates

Denver, Colorado – US aviation authorities are currently investigating a concerning incident involving a baseball coach who was filmed inside a plane’s cockpit while airborne. The video, originally shared on Instagram by Colorado Rockies hitting coach Hensley Meulens, has sparked controversy due to regulations prohibiting passengers from accessing cockpit areas during flights.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is actively looking into the matter, with United Airlines confirming that two pilots have been suspended pending the outcome of their internal investigation. The incident occurred during a flight to Canada for a game between the Colorado Rockies and the Toronto Blue Jays on April 10th.

In the video, Mr. Meulens can be seen seated in one of the cockpit chairs, jokingly pretending to take control of the aircraft while announcing, “I’m going to land the plane tonight.” Although the video has since been deleted, it has raised significant safety concerns and prompted swift action from United Airlines.

United Airlines expressed deep concern over the video, highlighting the potential safety risks associated with an unauthorized individual being in the flight deck while the autopilot was engaged. The airline promptly reported the incident to the FAA, emphasizing that it constitutes a clear violation of safety and operational protocols.

The Rockies’ manager, Bud Black, disclosed that Mr. Meulens has apologized to both the team and United Airlines for his actions. Despite the incident, Black assured that Mr. Meulens’ employment status would not be affected, pending the outcome of the investigation. Born in the Dutch island of Curacao, Mr. Meulens boasts an extensive playing career across various countries and has served on coaching staff for multiple Major League Baseball teams.

Both Mr. Meulens and the Colorado Rockies have been approached for further comments on the situation. However, details surrounding the investigation and any potential repercussions are yet to be fully disclosed. The incident has underscored the importance of adhering to strict aviation safety guidelines and the consequences of deviating from established protocols while in-flight.
