**Coma Miracle**: Man Wakes After 13 Years to Tell His Unbelievable Story

Johannesburg, South Africa – After spending 13 years in what seemed like a coma, Martin Pistorius emerged to share his incredible story of resilience and determination. At the age of 12, Martin fell ill with what was initially thought to be the flu. However, his condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to a diagnosis of cryptococcal meningitis and tuberculosis of the brain, rendering him unable to speak or move.

Despite being told that there was little hope for his recovery, Martin’s parents, Joan and Rodney, chose to care for him in a specialized facility. For years, Martin was trapped in his own body, experiencing a profound sense of powerlessness as he remained conscious but unable to communicate or control his surroundings.

It wasn’t until four years later, around his 16th birthday, that a breakthrough occurred. Although still believed to be in a coma, Martin was actually aware of his surroundings and could comprehend conversations happening around him. In order to cope with his isolation, Martin turned to his imagination, envisioning fantastical scenarios to escape the confines of his physical state.

In 2001, a relief carer at the day center, Virna van der Walt, recognized Martin’s consciousness and urged his parents to seek help at the Centre For Augmentative and Alternative Communication. There, Martin was introduced to a communication device that allowed him to select letters and words with the movement of his eyes.

Over the years, Martin honed his communication skills and eventually found work at the same center that had facilitated his breakthrough. His dedication and perseverance led to a paid position and, eventually, a university degree. Along the way, Martin met Joanna, a social worker from Britain, whom he later married. Together, they welcomed a son, Sebastian Albert Pistorius, in 2018.

Martin’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the human spirit in overcoming seemingly insurmountable challenges. His story serves as a beacon of hope for all those facing adversity, demonstrating that with perseverance and support, anything is possible.
