Costco Chicken Chaos: Canadian’s Viral Video Goes Political On Food Prices

Toronto, Canada – A Canadian Costco customer’s TikTok video showcasing a misprinted price tag for chicken drumsticks has gone viral, amassing more than 7 million views. The video was intended to make a political statement about the high food prices in Canada.

In the 15-second TikTok clip, Cass Szabo pointed out two packages of chicken drumsticks in the refrigerated section, one marked at $202.18 and the other at $224.58. With one Canadian dollar equivalent to about 74 cents in United States dollars, the packages were listed at approximately $150 and $166 in American currency.

Szabo clarified that the poultry labels were misprints and the video was meant to be a satire. “I love being Canadian, and I love this country but that doesn’t excuse the fact there is an insane housing crisis across all of Canada right now and it’s affecting our entire population,” she said in an email. “Immigrants are being forced to leave because of the skyrocketing cost of living and I don’t think that’s right.”

The TikTok video had received nearly 8 million views and sparked various responses, with some understanding Szabo’s humor and others expressing disbelief that Costco would charge such exorbitant prices for the chicken.

Despite the attention the video has garnered, Costco did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the viral video.
