Seattle, Washington – A group of cyclists in the Seattle area demonstrated true heroism when they fought off a cougar to save one of their own. The incident, which occurred on a trail northeast of Fall City, left cyclist Keri Bergere with neck and face injuries. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed the rare attack that took place on February 17.
Bergere, who spent five days in the hospital, is still in the process of recovering from the terrifying ordeal. The actions of her fellow cyclists were praised as “heroic” by Fish and Wildlife Lt. Erik Olson. The cyclists, comprising Bergere, Annie Bilotta, and Tisch Williams, recounted the harrowing incident that unfolded on the Tokul Creek biking trails.
During their trek, Bergere was suddenly attacked by a pair of cougars who dragged her off her bicycle. With incredible courage and quick thinking, the group of cyclists banded together to fend off the 75-pound cat. Despite the cougar’s strong grip, the riders managed to overpower it and rescue Bergere from its jaws.
The cyclists detailed a chaotic scene where they engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the predator, using sticks and rocks to defend themselves and their friend. Cougars, known for their powerful jaws that exert significant pressure, pose a serious threat to their prey by targeting crucial areas like the skull, neck bones, and windpipes.
After a relentless struggle, the cyclists succeeded in weakening the cougar’s hold on Bergere, allowing her to break free. The group then used a bicycle to pin down the mountain lion until help arrived. Although the cougar was subsequently shot by Fish and Wildlife officers, Bergere’s unwavering gratitude towards her rescuers remains evident.
The incident serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity displayed by the Seattle cyclists in the face of danger. Bergere credits her fellow riders for saving her life, emphasizing the critical role they played in her survival.
