D-Day Heroes: President Biden and Allies Honor WWII Veterans in Normandy!

NORMANDY, FRANCE – President Biden, alongside key U.S. allies, commemorated the 80th anniversary of the historic D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied France. The invasion, led by U.S.-led allied forces, marked a pivotal moment in World War II, ultimately leading to the defeat of Nazi German forces in Europe within a year. Mr. Biden, accompanied by French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, gathered to honor the Western allies’ most significant victory and the largest seaborne invasion in history.

Seventy-three thousand courageous Americans landed at Utah and Omaha beaches in Normandy on June 6, 1944. As part of his trip, President Biden met with American veterans and their families to pay tribute to their sacrifice at a memorial ceremony at the Normandy American Cemetery. Speaking individually with the veterans, he expressed gratitude for their service, highlighting the importance of their contribution to history.

The D-Day operation, known as OVERLORD, involved five naval assault divisions landing on the shores of Normandy, France, with more than 195,000 naval personnel and over 130,000 troops from the U.S., Great Britain, and their allies. The coordinated efforts of these troops played a significant role in the eventual defeat of German Nazi forces in Europe.

President Biden is scheduled to deliver a speech at Normandy’s Point du Hoc cliffs, emphasizing the bravery of those who scaled the cliffs 80 years ago and underscoring the importance of democracy and the risks of isolationism. Additionally, the President will engage in discussions with world leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to address ongoing global challenges such as the situation in Ukraine and other geopolitical issues.

Throughout his visit, President Biden will participate in various activities, including a parade procession to the Elysee Palace and laying a wreath at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery on Sunday. The trip aims to strengthen diplomatic ties with key allies, reaffirming the shared commitment to peace and security in a world facing complex challenges.

As the world commemorates this historic milestone, President Biden’s presence in Normandy serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Allied forces and the enduring values of freedom and democracy. This commemoration not only honors the past but also reinforces the importance of unity and cooperation in addressing present-day global threats.
