Originally scheduled for June 5, 1944, bad weather conditions forced a 24-hour delay, with Allied divisions landing on the five designated beaches at 6:30 a.m. on June 6. The term “D-Day” was a military code for the start of an important operation, with the first “D” standing for “Day,” signifying the day of the operation.
The successful execution of Operation Overlord saw unprecedented cooperation among international armed forces, with more than 2 million troops stationed in the UK in preparation for the invasion. While the majority of troops were American, British, and Canadian, soldiers from various other countries also participated in the operation.
