DALLAS, TX — A man accused of killing a 22-year-old Dallas resident during a catalytic converter theft in 2021 has been arrested in Mexico after spending years as a fugitive, authorities said. Juvencio Solorzano has been returned to Dallas and booked into the Dallas County jail on a capital murder charge.
The arrest brings a major development in the investigation into the Dec. 1, 2021, death of Sergio Maas. Dallas police identified Solorzano as the suspected shooter in 2022 and had sought help from the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force to locate him. Authorities said task force members recently found Solorzano in Mexico and took him into custody.
Dallas police originally responded to a shooting call at 3233 Sumter Drive at about 3:37 a.m. on Dec. 1, 2021. Officers found Maas suffering from a gunshot wound inside his residence. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police initially said the circumstances and motive were under investigation, but detectives later connected the shooting to the theft of a catalytic converter from Maas’ vehicle.
Investigators said Maas became aware of people near his Toyota Sequoia in the apartment complex parking lot. Maas activated the vehicle’s alarm from his balcony. Police later determined that a group had removed the catalytic converter from the vehicle and identified Solorzano as the person they allege fired the fatal shot.
Dallas police publicly named Solorzano as the suspected shooter in August 2022. At the time, the department warned that he should be considered armed and extremely dangerous and asked anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact the U.S. Marshals North Texas Fugitive Task Force. He remained wanted until authorities located him in Mexico this week.
The U.S. Marshals Service worked with Mexican authorities after investigators determined Solorzano was in Mexico, Acting U.S. Marshal Sean Malecha told FOX 4. Authorities took Solorzano into custody without a confrontation. Officials have not publicly disclosed the specific location in Mexico where he was found.
Another person, Isabel Campbell, was arrested in connection with the case in 2022. According to court records cited by FOX 4, Campbell pleaded guilty to murder and received a 10-year prison sentence. Authorities have not publicly clarified whether any other suspects face charges related to Maas’ death.
Solorzano’s arrest ends the international search for a suspect Dallas police had sought for years, but the criminal case against him remains pending. A capital murder charge is an accusation, and Solorzano has not been convicted in connection with Maas’ death. Information about an attorney representing him and his next court proceeding was not immediately available in the reports reviewed.
Solorzano remained in the Dallas County jail following his return from Mexico as the case moved back into the local court system. Authorities had not announced additional charges or released further details about the international operation that led to his capture.
