LOS ANGELES, CA – The world of daytime television is mourning the loss of Drake Hogestyn, a beloved actor whose enduring role as John Black on “Days of our Lives” captivated audiences for nearly four decades. Hogestyn passed away on Saturday at the age of 70, just a day shy of his 71st birthday, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. His passing was announced on the show’s official Instagram account, leaving fans and colleagues heartbroken.
Hogestyn’s portrayal of John Black, a character with a rich and complex history, became a cornerstone of the soap opera. The show’s statement commemorated Hogestyn’s remarkable resilience and unwavering dedication to his craft and his audience. His passion for acting and commitment to “Days of our Lives” was evident in every performance, earning him a cherished place in the hearts of viewers and colleagues alike.
Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Hogestyn’s path to stardom was unconventional. He was a standout college baseball player at the University of South Florida, where he also pursued a double major in microbiology and applied sciences. Initially intending to become an oral surgeon, his life took a dramatic turn when he was drafted by both the Cardinals and the Yankees in the 1976 MLB Draft. Unfortunately, injuries curtailed his promising baseball career.
Hogestyn’s transition into acting was serendipitous. He was selected for a prestigious training program with Columbia Pictures in Los Angeles, which paved the way for his casting as John Black on “Days of our Lives.” Over 38 years, Hogestyn brought depth and charisma to his character, appearing in more than 4,200 episodes and becoming a fixture of the show.
Beyond his iconic role on the soap opera, Hogestyn’s acting credits include appearances in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” a guest spot on “Criminal Minds,” and a part in the Hallmark film “Christmas Tree Lane.” Colleagues remember him as a generous and passionate performer, whose kindness and dedication extended beyond the screen.
Former co-stars Alison Sweeney and Christopher Sean, who played significant roles alongside Hogestyn, conveyed their sorrow and admiration through heartfelt tributes. They described Hogestyn as a mentor and friend, whose influence went far beyond his on-screen presence.
Hogestyn leaves behind his wife, Victoria Post, four children—Whitney, Alexandra, Rachael, and Ben—and seven grandchildren. His passing marks a significant loss to the entertainment industry, and his absence will be deeply felt by family, friends, and fans.
