MADRID, SPAIN – The Russian pilot, Maxim Kuzminov, who defected to Ukraine in a dramatic manner has been reported dead, according to Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Directorate. His body was found in a parking garage in Villajoyosa, Spain, where he had settled since his defection. The circumstances surrounding his death are still under investigation, with conflicting reports initially indicating that he was Ukrainian, but later confirmed to be Kuzminov by a source within Ukraine’s GUR.
Kuzminov’s defection in August involved flying his helicopter across the border to Ukraine, leaving two Russian service members on board the Mi-8 helicopter behind, who were later killed while attempting to escape. He had fled Russia due to his opposition to the war, seeking safety and a new life in Ukraine. After reaching out to Ukrainian intelligence, he was offered safety, new documents, and monetary compensation in exchange for defection. Ukraine fulfilled its promises to Kuzminov, giving him the choice to stay in Ukraine, serve in the Armed Forces, or move to the EU.
The news of his death has raised questions about the involvement of Russian authorities, with both the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov and Russian Foreign Intelligence Director Sergey Naryshkin refusing to comment on Kuzminov’s death. This comes after a Russian TV segment aired threats to his life, indicating that Russia’s military intelligence agency had received an order regarding Kuzminov’s fate.
Despite the controversy surrounding his death, the Freedom for Russia Legion, a group connected to Ukraine’s GUR and comprised of Russian nationals fighting for Ukraine, expressed condolences to Kuzminov, praising him as a “real warrior and honest man.” This highlights the complex geopolitical tensions and personal risks attached to defection and opposition to state policies in the region.
