Deputies Identify Woman Sought After Palm Bay Storage Shooting

A storage facility manager suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening after being shot during a dispute Saturday morning.

PALM BAY, FL — Brevard County deputies are searching for a woman identified as a suspect after a manager was shot Saturday morning at a Public Storage facility during a confrontation involving two people who had been sleeping inside a rented unit.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office identified the woman as Kandice Jo Pierce and said investigators were working with the Brevard County State Attorney’s Office to finalize a warrant for attempted first-degree murder. Sheriff Wayne Ivey said Pierce should be considered armed and dangerous. Deputies also said she is wanted on an unrelated arson warrant. Authorities had not announced an arrest as of Saturday night.

The shooting happened around 10 a.m. at a Public Storage facility on Babcock Street near Palm Bay Road, according to Ivey. The facility manager was conducting morning rounds when she encountered two adult women sleeping inside a storage unit. Authorities said one of the women had rented the unit.

Ivey said the manager told the women that sleeping inside the storage unit was not allowed. During the encounter, two shots were fired from what investigators believe was a small-caliber handgun. One round struck the manager, while the other missed, according to the sheriff.

The manager was able to get away, find cover and barricade herself after she was shot, Ivey said. The two women then left the property. Authorities said the manager’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. Her name and additional information about her condition had not been released.

Deputies later identified Pierce as the person they were seeking in connection with the shooting. Investigators said Pierce had recently rented a unit at the storage facility. The sheriff’s office was also trying to locate the second woman who was inside the unit when the confrontation occurred.

Investigators said locating that woman is important to determining who possessed the firearm and who fired the shots. Although Pierce has been identified by authorities as a suspect in the case, the investigation remained active Saturday night and no charge related to the shooting had been announced as filed.

According to the sheriff’s office, Pierce was last seen on video around 1:30 p.m. Saturday at a RaceTrac on Palm Bay Road. Ivey warned that she should not be approached. Earlier Saturday, authorities said they did not believe there was an immediate threat to the broader community as deputies continued their search.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is continuing as detectives work to locate Pierce and the other woman, determine who fired the weapon and complete the case for review by prosecutors. No additional arrests or court proceedings had been announced as of Saturday night.
