Deputies Seek Suspect After Deadly Drive-By Shooting

An 18-year-old was shot outside a home Wednesday evening and taken to a hospital in stable condition.

MIAMI, FL — Miami-Dade sheriff’s deputies were searching Thursday for the person who opened fire from a passing vehicle and wounded an 18-year-old outside a southwest Miami-Dade home Wednesday evening, authorities said.

The shooting drew deputies and fire rescue crews to a residential area near Southwest 196th Avenue and Southwest 308th Street. The victim was found in a county swale in the front yard of a home, conscious and able to speak with deputies. Authorities said the victim later was taken to a hospital and listed in stable condition.

The gunfire was reported Wednesday evening in a neighborhood of far southwest Miami-Dade, where deputies focused part of their investigation around a home and the nearby intersection. Neighbors who spoke off camera said they heard five gunshots. From above, law enforcement vehicles could be seen near the scene as deputies walked along a driveway and spoke with one another after the shooting.

Deputies said the victim told investigators that someone in a vehicle drove by and that shots were fired from that vehicle, striking the victim. Authorities did not immediately release the victim’s name. They also did not say whether the 18-year-old lived at the home, was visiting the area or had been targeted. No description of the shooter was released Thursday, and deputies had not confirmed what type of vehicle was used.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue medics took the victim from the scene to a hospital. Authorities said the victim was stable, but they did not release more details on the person’s injuries. The shooting left investigators with several unanswered questions, including how many people were inside the vehicle, whether any surveillance video captured the gunfire and what led up to the attack. Deputies also had not announced whether shell casings or other evidence had been recovered.

The case unfolded in a spread-out part of southwest Miami-Dade County where homes sit near long roads and open stretches of land. The area around Southwest 196th Avenue and Southwest 308th Street is south of much of the county’s urban core and west of Homestead. That setting can shape a shooting investigation because deputies may have to rely on witness accounts, private cameras, traffic cameras and vehicle descriptions to track where a suspect went after leaving the scene.

As of Thursday afternoon, deputies had not announced an arrest or said whether they had identified a suspect. No charges had been reported. Investigators were expected to continue checking the immediate area, speaking with neighbors and reviewing any available video from nearby homes or roads. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office had not released a motive, and it remained unknown whether the victim and shooter knew each other.

The shooting rattled residents who heard the gunfire and later saw deputies working around the home and intersection. One neighbor said off camera that the shots came in a burst. Deputies did not report any other injuries, and no nearby road closures were announced in the available public reports. The scene appeared to remain focused on the front yard area where the victim was found and on the path the vehicle may have taken before and after the shooting.

The investigation remained open Thursday, with the victim stable and no confirmed arrest publicly announced. The next key development is expected to be any suspect or vehicle description released by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
