Baghlan, Afghanistan – Amid the devastation caused by flash floods in northern Afghanistan, three young children found themselves stranded on the roof of a mosque, covered in mud. The harrowing scene captured rescuers bringing their baby brother, Arian, to safety as the floodwaters raged below them.
As the death toll climbed to at least 300 people in 18 districts across three provinces, the United Nations’ World Food Programme reported that over 200 individuals were injured in the natural disaster. Videos emerged showing the chaos and destruction as mud houses were washed away, and people struggled to survive in the fast-moving floodwaters.
The rescued children, aged 3, 5, and 6, were part of a family of eight siblings caught in the flooding in Folo, located in the Bulka district of Baghlan. The local school headmaster’s son described the ominous signs leading up to the disaster, highlighting severe winds and darkness enveloping the area before the heavy rain began to fall.
With homes destroyed and farmland swept away, the already vulnerable community faces further challenges in the aftermath of the floods.
