DoorDash Driver Carjacked During Delivery, Suspect Arrested

Police said the driver declined medical transport after the vehicle was recovered.

ROSEVILLE, MI — A DoorDash driver was carjacked Tuesday afternoon while dropping off an order in a Roseville neighborhood, and police arrested a suspect after the stolen vehicle was abandoned and a short foot chase followed.

The case drew attention because it happened during a routine food delivery, in daylight, on a residential street. Roseville police said the driver was not taken to a hospital, but the stolen vehicle struck or damaged nearby property before officers made an arrest near 12 Mile and Utica roads.

The carjacking happened shortly before 1 p.m. near Pinehurst and Biehl, where the driver had arrived to drop off a DoorDash order. Police said a suspect approached the driver, forced his way into the vehicle and drove off. The driver’s name was not released. Witness Anna Weier, who was receiving the delivery, said she saw the driver run back toward the moving vehicle as the suspect tried to leave. “I called 911 because I didn’t know what else to do,” Weier said. “It was scary. I felt so bad for him.”

Surveillance video from the area showed the stolen vehicle turning a corner with the driver’s door still open before it sped away. The vehicle left damage behind, including a fence owned by nearby resident Lena Andriths. Andriths said she had just pulled into her driveway when she saw the damage and later learned it was tied to the carjacking. Police said the suspect later abandoned the vehicle and ran before officers caught up with him near 12 Mile and Utica roads. Authorities did not immediately release the suspect’s name, age or hometown.

No serious injuries were reported. Police said the DoorDash driver declined medical transport after the incident. It was not immediately clear whether the driver was hurt, whether any weapon was used or how long the suspect had control of the vehicle. Investigators also had not publicly said whether the order was completed before the carjacking began. The damaged fence became one of the clearest signs of the chaotic path the vehicle took through the neighborhood.

The arrest follows other recent carjacking cases in Roseville, including a November incident in which three teens were accused of taking a vehicle from two women outside a restaurant and leading police on a chase that ended near a Sam’s Club. That earlier case involved different victims and suspects. In the DoorDash case, police described a single suspect and a shorter foot chase after the vehicle was abandoned. The new case added to concerns about crimes that unfold quickly in public places and residential areas.

Roseville police said the suspect is expected to be arraigned Thursday on several felony counts, including carjacking. The arraignment would be the first public court step in the case and could bring more details about the allegations, the suspect’s identity and any bond request. Police said they were still seeking information from witnesses. Investigators were expected to review surveillance video, 911 call records and statements from people who saw the carjacking or the vehicle’s path afterward.

Neighbors described a frightening scene that moved from a delivery stop to damaged property within moments. Andriths said she was relieved no children or people walking dogs were in the vehicle’s path when the suspect drove through the area. “Thank goodness there were no little kids running around, and thank goodness no one was walking their dogs down this strip,” Andriths said. She said the fence could be replaced and that she was praying for the DoorDash driver.

The suspect remained in custody ahead of the expected Thursday arraignment. Police had not released additional charging details as of June 25, and the driver’s identity remained private.
