LANSING, Michigan – Former Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield faces felony charges for allegedly embezzling public and private funds alongside his wife, Stephanie. Attorney General Dana Nessel announced the charges on Tuesday, accusing Chatfield, 35, of leading a lavish lifestyle fueled by funds misappropriated for fine dining, luxury hotels, and exotic trips.
The charges against Chatfield include embezzlement, conspiracy, and larceny, with the most serious charge of conducting a criminal enterprise carrying a 20-year penalty. Chatfield’s wife is also facing charges related to improperly charging personal family expenses to a nonprofit organization called the Peninsula Fund. Nessel emphasized that each charge is a serious felony, with potential prison sentences.
Nessel further detailed how Chatfield used public and political funds for personal expenses, including a family vacation to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. The investigation also uncovered a “check kickback” scheme where funds were misused for personal gain. Additionally, Chatfield and his wife allegedly utilized the Peninsula Fund to pay off thousands of dollars in charges on Chatfield’s personal credit card.
While the investigation into financial crimes continues, Nessel revealed that an inquiry into sexual assault allegations against a family member has been closed without charges. Chatfield’s attorney criticized the charges as politically motivated, vowing to contest them at each step of the legal process.
