RESTON, VA – A welfare check in Reston, Virginia, turned deadly when 33-year-old Sydney Wilson, a mental-health specialist, was shot by a veteran Fairfax County officer after she charged at him with a knife. The incident, captured on bodycam footage, occurred inside her apartment building on September 16.
The video, released by police on Monday, details Wilson’s agitated state when officers knocked on her door around 10 a.m. Initially resisting to engage, Wilson eventually opened the door, greeted the officer, and then brandished a knife, prompting a rapid sequence of events captured by the camera.
Peter Liu, the officer who responded, is seen on the footage backing away from Wilson, a 6-foot-tall woman, as she pursued him with a kitchen knife. Liu repeatedly instructed Wilson to “back up” as he retreated down a corridor with no exit. Despite his efforts at de-escalation, Wilson attacked, delivering multiple slashes to his face.
In reaction to the immediate threat, Liu discharged his firearm, striking Wilson three times. She collapsed and was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Liu, who has been with the department for 14 years and has crisis intervention training, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
At a press conference, Police Chief Kevin Davis expressed his condolences over the loss of life and noted Liu’s trapped position in the hallway as justification for his use of lethal force.
