Father Speaks After Mother Charged in Toddler’s Death

Melissa Lynn Beisel is being held without bail after prosecutors charged her in the death of her 2-year-old son.

SANTA ANA, CA — The father of a 2-year-old Placentia boy said he wants the child’s mother punished to the fullest after prosecutors charged her with murder months after the toddler was found dead in a bathroom.

The case centers on the death of Aidan, a 2-year-old boy found unresponsive Sept. 22, 2025, at a Placentia home near Main Street and Santa Fe Avenue. Prosecutors say his mother, Melissa Lynn Beisel, 41, of Fresno, was later charged with murder and assault on a child with force likely to produce great bodily injury resulting in death. Beisel has not entered a plea. She is being held without bail while the case moves through Orange County Superior Court.

Aidan’s father, identified publicly only as L.J. for privacy reasons, said he first thought his son was asleep in another room that night. He later went to check on Beisel and found the bathroom door closed. “I was just knocking on the door like, ‘Are you still in there?’ Didn’t respond,” L.J. said. He told NBCLA he found Beisel in the shower with Aidan. “She was sitting down in the shower, back against the wall with him on top of her,” he said. “I reach in, grab his arm like, ‘Come on, Aidan. Let’s go.’ It hit pretty hard.”

Placentia police and fire personnel responded to the home after the father called 911. Aidan was taken to a hospital, where he died. Authorities said Beisel was found with superficial stab wounds to her neck and arms and was also taken to a hospital for treatment. Investigators have said she did not call police before the father found her. Prosecutors said the water was still running in the shower when officers arrived. The case was first treated as a possible drowning after Beisel told detectives she had been bathing the boy in a storage bin used as a bathtub inside a walk-in shower.

According to investigators, Beisel told police she stepped away for about two minutes to get soap and returned to find Aidan facedown in the water. Police said she also told them she tried CPR and then harmed herself with a sharp object. Authorities later said she stayed in the bathroom with the child for about six hours before he was found. The case changed course after further investigation. Prosecutors said drowning was ruled out as the cause of death and the case was classified as a homicide. Officials have not publicly released Aidan’s exact cause of death.

Beisel was initially taken into custody after the September incident, but prosecutors did not immediately file charges and she was released. The investigation continued for months. Prosecutors said Beisel later moved to Coarsegold in Madera County. Placentia police arrested her there on June 4, 2026. Five days later, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office announced the murder charge and the assault charge tied to a child’s death. Senior Deputy District Attorney Anna McIntire of the Homicide Unit is prosecuting the case.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said the case had caused deep grief for Aidan’s family and for the people who investigated it. “A mother is a child’s first protector,” Spitzer said in a statement. He said prosecutors would pursue justice for Aidan and those who loved him. Beisel’s attorney said after her Tuesday court appearance that there would be no public comment. Under California law, the charges carry a possible sentence of 25 years to life in prison if Beisel is convicted on all counts.

L.J. described Aidan as an energetic child who liked running, playing and going to the park. He said he still wakes up hoping the events of the past year are not real. “I don’t know what set her off,” he said. “I have a million ‘Why’ questions but I’m probably not going to get answers to any one of them.” Asked what he wants from the court, he said he hopes Beisel receives the maximum punishment. “She does not belong out in public society,” he said. “Lock her up and throw away the key.”

Beisel appeared in court Tuesday and did not enter a plea. She remains in custody without bail and is scheduled to return to court Aug. 28.
