MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas State University has part ways with head basketball coach Jerome Tang, a decision announced by Athletic Director Gene Taylor late Sunday evening. This comes just days after a disappointing home game where fans displayed their discontent by donning bags over their heads.
In a statement, Taylor emphasized that the decision was made for the greater good of the university and its basketball program. He noted that Tang’s recent public statements and the overall trajectory of the team did not meet the institution’s standards. “We wish Coach Tang and his family all the best moving forward,” Taylor said.
Tang expressed his disappointment in the university’s choice, adamantly disagreeing with how his tenure ended. “I have acted with integrity and fulfilled my responsibilities as head coach,” he remarked in a statement to media outlets.
The Wildcats, who have struggled this season with a record of 10-15 and 1-11 in the Big 12, suffered a 91-62 defeat against Cincinnati last Wednesday. Post-game, Tang voiced his frustration, acknowledging the embarrassment of the situation. “These guys do not deserve to wear this uniform,” he said, vowing a commitment to improve the program in the future.
This week saw Kansas State endure its sixth consecutive loss, falling 78-64 to No. 3 Houston. Tang’s time at Kansas State spanned four seasons, during which he compiled an overall record of 71-57, including a notable 26-10 in his inaugural year.
The university stated that it will soon announce an interim head coach while initiating a national search for Tang’s permanent successor. It comes at a challenging time for the Wildcats, who are scheduled to face Baylor at home on Tuesday night. Tang previously served as an assistant at Baylor for 19 years, contributing to the team’s first national championship in 2021.
As Kansas State navigates this coaching transition, the focus will be on restoring the program’s competitiveness while addressing the sentiments of its fan base, which is clearly yearning for a turnaround following the recent struggles.
