Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Ends Disney Feud With $17 Billion Development Deal – What’s Next?

Orlando, Florida – After months of dispute, the tension between Disney and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has finally been resolved with the approval of a 15-year development plan by the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District on June 12.

The agreement entails Disney’s significant investment of up to $17 billion in Disney World over the next two decades, with the commitment from the district to make necessary infrastructure improvements. While there has been no official announcement from Disney regarding expansion plans, the deal potentially opens the door for the addition of a fifth amusement park at Disney World in Florida.

Existing assemblage of Epcot, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios, Disney World may see this new venture as an opportunity for growth after the recent approval of the development plan. Animal Kingdom, established in 1998, remains the most recent addition to the park.

The feud erupted in 2022 following Disney’s criticism of DeSantis’ Don’t Say Gay education bill. Vying for control over various privileges such as tax exemptions, Disney’s police and fire services, and road infrastructure management, the rift intensified as Disney took legal action to protect its interests against political backlash.

However, both parties reached a resolution in March, setting the stage for the new development agreement by ceasing further litigation in favor of collaboration towards this ambitious plan. The new deal mandates projects to support infrastructure development, construction, and affordable housing initiatives in central Florida, thereby allowing Disney to proceed with the construction of a fifth theme park, along with additional minor attractions.

Highlighting the potential economic boost and enhanced guest experiences resulting from this massive investment, Jeff Vahle, president of Walt Disney World Resort, expressed optimism for the growth and prosperity of the global destination.

As Disneyland in Anaheim, California, embarks on its own expansion project, the approval of Disney World’s ambitious development plan marks a significant step towards revitalizing the iconic theme park in Orlando, Florida.
