Former MLB pitcher charged with murder

LAKE TAHOE, CA – Former Major League Baseball player Danny Serafini and Samantha Scott, 33, were arrested on Friday in relation to the 2021 homicide of Robert Gary Spohr, aged 70, and the attempted murder of 68-year-old Wendy Wood. The tragic event unfolded in June 2021, in Lake Tahoe, California.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest, disclosing that Spohr and Wood were related to Serafini by marriage. The specifics of the bond between Serafini and Scott remain a mystery, though officials confirmed they knew each other.

On a chilling day in June, deputies raced to the scene following a 911 call, discovering Spohr had been fatally shot. Wendy Wood was rushed to a medical facility where she recuperated but passed away roughly a year afterward. Her demise’s connection to the 2021 assault has not been defined.

Evidence accrued during the investigation, including a surveillance video depicting a hooded and masked man approaching the victims’ home shortly before the fatal encounter, facilitated the authorities in connecting Serafini and Scott to the crime. Both are now awaiting extradition to California.

Serafini’s professional baseball career spanned teams like the Minnesota Twins, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, and he concluded his journey with the Colorado Rockies.
