France Demands Trilateral Summit with Israel and US to Address Hezbollah Threat

Paris, France – Israel has shown interest in French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal for a trilateral summit to address tensions in the north, as reported by sources from Israel’s Foreign Ministry. However, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s rejection of the plan has caused friction, with sources criticizing him for demonizing France – described as a strong ally of Israel.

According to sources, France is displeased with Gallant’s actions, feeling as though he is accusing them of antisemitism. The proposal for a trilateral process to find a diplomatic solution to the cross-border violence involving the IDF and Hezbollah in Lebanon was initially raised during a visit by French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné to Israel in April. The process would also involve the Lebanese government.

Despite the interest from Israel, the proposal is still in its early stages, with the involvement of the Lebanese government and formal acceptance from the US required. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Israel emphasizes the importance of protecting the country’s interests on the northern border against all relevant parties.

Tensions between Paris and Jerusalem have been heightened, particularly after France banned Israeli defense companies from participating in the Eurosatory – the industry’s largest global arms exhibit. Despite this, Macron has announced that the three countries have agreed to work together towards a diplomatic solution to the escalating violence affecting Israelis along the northern border.

Gallant, however, has stated that Israel will not participate in the trilateral framework proposed by France, citing France’s adoption of hostile policies against Israel. He highlights France’s overlooking of atrocities committed by Hamas against Israelis as a point of contention.

Macron, on the other hand, has expressed the need for a trilateral contact group involving Israel, the United States, and France to advance on the proposed roadmap. The urgency for increased efforts is emphasized by a senior French official, given the dangerous escalation in hostilities.

Efforts from France and the United States aim to defuse tensions, with proposals submitted to both sides to mitigate exchanges on the border between Lebanon and Israel. The special relationship between France and Lebanon, due to historical administration by France, adds a unique dynamic to the diplomatic efforts.

Key Israeli officials are scheduled to engage in talks with top US officials in Washington regarding Iran and its involvement with proxy groups, Hamas and Hezbollah. As efforts continue to find a diplomatic resolution, the role of these officials in shaping future strategies remains crucial.
