Gas Tax Increase and More: Illinois Braces for Major Changes on July 1

Chicago, Illinois – Monday ushered in a wave of significant changes across Illinois and parts of the Chicago area as new laws and policies took effect. While January 1 is usually associated with the start of new laws, several key changes actually kick in on July 1.

One of the most notable shifts is the increase in the gas tax in Illinois, impacting motorists as they fill up their tanks. The state’s gas tax has gone up as part of its yearly increment, resulting in slightly higher prices at the pump. Meanwhile, diesel fuel prices have also seen an increase. This marks the third time the state has raised the tax rate after pausing it in 2022 due to concerns over inflation.

Additionally, Chicago workers now have increased access to guaranteed paid leave, with eligibility for up to five days of paid leave and sick leave for those who work at least 80 hours within a 120-day period. The minimum wage has also seen adjustments in Chicago and Cook County, with hourly rates rising to $16.20 and $14.05 respectively for non-tipped workers.

Furthermore, new laws in Illinois include granting driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants, enhancing protections for freelance workers, and implementing changes in the Child Labor Law to protect social media stars. The state has also amended the School Code to require public votes before approving new contracts for district-administered assessment tests.

These changes reflect a mix of financial adjustments, labor protections, and social reforms aimed at improving various aspects of life in Illinois and the Chicago area. As residents acclimate to these new policies, the impact and implications of these changes will continue to unfold in the coming days and weeks.
