Los Angeles, California – Breast cancer diagnosis can bring about a difficult period for many individuals, as they come to terms with the changes to their bodies. However, Vanessa Gonzalez faced their double mastectomy with a sense of calm and eventually found a reason to celebrate it. Gonzalez, a nonbinary individual, had always known their gender identity but had faced challenges expressing it due to societal norms. When diagnosed with cancer, Gonzalez’s decision to undergo surgery was influenced by their journey towards self-acceptance.
Gonzalez is one of seven models featured in a new photography project called “Marks of Majesty,” aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer and showcasing the diverse individuals it affects. The project, spearheaded by Stephanie Francis, highlights vulnerable yet confident poses of the models, emphasizing how cancer has transformed their bodies and allowed them to reassert their beauty, body image, and gender expression.
In the photos, models proudly display regal silver or gold metallic paint brushed across their surgical scars, turning their bodies into works of art.
