Girl charged with homicide after gun prank shooting

BANGOR, ME – A 20-year-old Maine woman, Olivia Babin, is facing charges of negligent manslaughter following a fatal shooting incident that took place last month. The victim, Daniel Ford-Coates, 24, was reportedly shot at close range in the forehead.

The incident, which unfolded in the early hours of April 2, was captured on a Nest doorbell camera. The footage, recently obtained by the New York Post, allegedly contains audio of Babin screaming at the grievously injured Ford-Coates, “You’re not dead!”

According to the charges, Babin had threatened to shoot before pulling the trigger. A witness at the scene can reportedly be heard reacting in shock as Babin asked what to do next.

Prosecutors allege that Babin discarded the firearm in a river, changed her attire, and then contacted 911. They claim that she provided a false account of the incident to the responding officers, a version contradicted by both witnesses and the captured video.

Local reports suggest that Babin had taken her boyfriend’s gun and removed the magazine in an attempt to frighten women in a downstairs apartment. However, a round remained in the chamber, leading to the fatal shot. The autopsy report confirmed contact burns on Ford-Coates’ skin, and his death was officially ruled a homicide.

Sources indicate that the group involved had been consuming drugs and alcohol prior to the incident. Babin is currently held on a $100,000 bail at the Penobscot County Jail, with a court date set for June 10.
