Barcelona, Spain – Google has unveiled a series of Android and app updates in time for the Mobile World Congress. Among the updates is the integration of their chatbot Gemini into the Google Messages app, allowing users to engage with the chatbot directly. Additionally, there are enhancements to Android Auto, Google Docs, and new intelligent accessibility features for the visually impaired.
For those eager to try out Gemini, the chatbot will be available as an update to the Messages app this week. However, users must be enrolled in Google’s beta testing program to access it at the moment. Notably, no Google One subscription is required for this version of Gemini. These updates aim to enhance the user experience and make interactions more seamless.
Android Auto has received an artificial intelligence update that includes the ability to summarize long texts or chat threads. This feature is designed to help users stay focused on the road while staying connected. Furthermore, the update will suggest replies and actions based on the context of the conversation, such as sharing your ETA with a friend when asked.
Google has also integrated generative AI into accessibility features in Lookout and Maps. Lens in Google Maps now includes screen reader enhancements to assist visually impaired individuals in identifying businesses and accessing relevant information. Meanwhile, Lookout uses AI to automatically generate descriptions for images, including those shared online or in messages. These updates are currently being rolled out globally in English.
In addition to AI-focused updates, Google has introduced practical enhancements such as the ability to switch output devices on Android when using Spotify. Another noteworthy update is the support for handwritten annotations in Google Docs for Android phones and tablets. This feature allows users to mark notes on documents using various pen and highlighter colors, enhancing the flexibility of document editing.
