Goon Squad Atrocities: Mississippi Officer Sentenced to 27 Years for Torturing Black Men

Jackson, Mississippi – A federal judge sentenced Brett McAlpin, a former Mississippi law enforcement officer, to over 27 years in prison for his involvement in the torture of two Black men in January 2023. McAlpin, a former deputy with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office, pleaded guilty to federal charges related to the incident, including conspiracy against rights and obstruction of justice. He also pleaded guilty to state charges and awaits sentencing on those charges. Another former officer, Joshua Hartfield, faces sentencing as well for his role in the case.

According to prosecutors, McAlpin beat one of the men with a piece of wood and threatened other officers to keep silent about the incident. Hartfield was accused of tasering the men while handcuffed and attempting to destroy evidence. The hearings in Jackson revealed the shocking brutality of a group of deputies known as the “Goon Squad,” who engaged in racially motivated beatings, torture, and even a mock execution.

Several former officers have been sentenced in connection to the case, including Christian Dedmon, who received a 40-year prison term for committing heinous acts described as “atrocious” and “pure hell.” The officers’ crimes involved raids on a home without a warrant, racist vitriol, use of tasers on handcuffed individuals, and physical abuse, leaving victims with lasting trauma.

The victims’ attorney, Malik Shabazz, described the sentencing as a historic moment for Mississippi and victims of police brutality. In addition to federal charges, the former officers also face state charges and await sentencing. Some officers, like Dedmon, were characterized as sexually perverse and unafraid to use excessive force, hiding behind their badges.

Throughout the sentencing hearings, victims came face-to-face with their tormentors, leading to emotional apologies and expressions of regret from some officers. Opdyke, for instance, addressed the court and the victims directly, acknowledging his role in the abuse and expressing deep remorse. The victims’ forgiveness in the face of such atrocities speaks to their resilience and capacity for compassion.

The officers’ actions have sparked outrage and calls for accountability, as the justice system grapples with addressing systemic issues of police abuse. As the legal proceedings continue, a spotlight is cast on the need for reform and accountability within law enforcement agencies to prevent such egregious acts in the future. The victims’ courage in confronting their abusers and seeking justice serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions.
