Grease Patty Simcox Actor Susan Buckner Dies at 72: Remembering Her Legacy Beyond Rydell High

Miami, Florida – Susan Buckner, best known for her role as Patty Simcox in the iconic 1978 musical “Grease,” passed away at the age of 72 on May 2, as confirmed by her publicist. In the role of the spirited Rydell High cheerleader, Buckner left a lasting impression on fans with her memorable portrayal alongside actors John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

At just 25 years old, Buckner stepped into the shoes of Simcox, embodying the essence of school spirit with her famous cheer that resonated with audiences: “Do the splits, give a yell! Show a little spirit for old Rydell! Way to go, red and white! Go Rydell, fight, fight, fight!” Beyond her role in “Grease,” Buckner went on to guest star in various television shows such as “The Love Boat,” “B.J and the Bear,” and “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries,” as well as co-starring in the ABC series “When the Whistle Blows.”

Following her acting career, Buckner transitioned to teaching and directing children’s theater productions at Pinecrest Elementary School while also leading dance classes at Body and Soul Gym in Coral Gables, Florida. Her influence extended beyond the screen as she shared her passion for the arts with younger generations.

Born in Seattle, Washington on January 28, 1952, Buckner had a diverse career that included being crowned Miss Washington in 1971 and representing the state in the Miss America pageant the following year. She was also a member of Dean Martin’s Golddiggers, a part of the all-girl group Fantasy, and formed a music duo, Buckner and Pratt. Additionally, Buckner showcased her talents as a dancer on various TV shows and even performed as a synchronized swimmer on “The Brady Bunch Variety Hour.”

Survived by her two children, Adam Josephs and Samantha Mansfield, along with four grandchildren, sister Linda, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, and long-time partner Al, Buckner leaves behind a legacy of entertainment and artistry that will be remembered by fans and colleagues alike for years to come.
