WASHINGTON, D.C. – Three police officers in Washington, D.C., sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds during an incident on Wednesday. The officers were shot while attempting to serve an arrest warrant for animal cruelty, the Metropolitan Police Department reported. The alleged gunman, identified as Julius James, 46, surrendered to authorities after a lengthy standoff.
According to Police Chief Pamela Smith, the officers initially tried to make contact with the suspect inside a residence, but he refused to come out. When they attempted to enter the home, the suspect opened fire, injuring three officers. A fourth officer was also injured, but not by gunfire. All four officers are expected to recover from their injuries.
Following James’ surrender, he was charged with cruelty to animals. Authorities also stated that additional charges related to the assault on the officers are pending. The humane rescue alliance also reported the recovery of 31 dogs from the residence, which are now under their care.
The situation drew attention from President Joe Biden, who expressed his support for the injured officers’ recovery. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre also addressed the incident, emphasizing the impact of gun violence on communities and calling for action from Congress to address the issue.
