Ruth Scully recounted how Nolan bravely expressed his understanding that he no longer had to fight the disease and would go to heaven to play until she joined him.
Nolan’s battle with cancer began in November 2015 when what seemed like a common cold turned out to be something far more serious. Doctors diagnosed him with Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, leading to rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, hair loss, and increasing weakness. Despite his young age, Nolan faced the aggressive and highly malignant cancer with incredible resilience, with the disease eventually spreading throughout his body.
As Nolan’s condition deteriorated rapidly, the family received heartbreaking news from the oncologist that the cancer had become resistant to all treatment options. Ruth described the agonizing decision to keep Nolan comfortable as his health declined. On February 4, 2017, Nolan passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love and strength that inspired thousands.
Through a Facebook page called “Nolan Strong,” Ruth and her husband Jonathan documented Nolan’s journey, sharing photos and stories of his unwavering spirit. The community rallied around the family, offering support and condolences as they navigated the difficult and emotional journey of Nolan’s illness and passing.
