Detroit, Michigan – Former NFL wide receiver Braylon Edwards came to the rescue of an 80-year-old man who was allegedly being attacked in a Detroit YMCA locker room, according to Farmington Hills police chief Jeff King.
King praised Edwards’ intervention, stating that it was instrumental in saving the victim’s life, who suffered significant injuries during the incident. The altercation began as a verbal exchange between 20-year-old Malik Ali Smith and the elderly man but escalated into a physical confrontation, leaving the victim in critical condition at a local hospital.
Smith was apprehended after attempting to flee the scene and has since been charged with assault with intent to murder, a serious offense that could result in a life sentence. His attorney, Christopher Quinn II, shared that Smith has a history of mental health issues, disputing claims of him being a violent individual.
Edwards, who witnessed the altercation, recounted hearing a commotion escalating in the locker room over loud music. He described intervening when he saw Smith about to harm the elderly man, subsequently restraining Smith to prevent further harm.
The seriousness of the incident was underscored by Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald, who condemned the attack as vicious and senseless. McDonald expressed gratitude towards Edwards for his heroic actions and pledged to seek justice for the victim.
A former standout at the University of Michigan, Edwards had a successful NFL career after being drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2005. Despite retiring from professional football, Edwards demonstrated bravery and selflessness in coming to the aid of the elderly man, showcasing the values of compassion and courage.
