ILLINOIS PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS: TRUMP AND BIDEN SCORE BIG WINS AS CLOSE RACES HEAT UP

Chicago, Illinois – As the polls closed in the 2024 Illinois primary election, the results started rolling in, revealing both decisive wins and close races. While some candidates secured their positions early on, others found themselves in neck-and-neck battles that continued well into the evening.

Congressman Danny Davis emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for Illinois’ 7th congressional district, defeating a field of challengers that included Kina Collins, Melissa Conyears-Ervin, Kouri Marshall, and Nikhil Bhatia. Davis, a longtime representative for the West Side and west suburbs-based district, has held the seat since 1997 and is now set to continue his tenure in Washington.

In another key race, Congressman Chuy García secured the Democratic primary win for Illinois’ 4th congressional district, fending off a challenge from Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez. García, a two-time Chicago mayoral candidate, has held the congressional seat since January 2019 and is expected to maintain his position in the strongly Democratic district in the November general election.

On the presidential front, both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump claimed victories in the 2024 Illinois presidential primaries. With enough projected delegates to earn the “presumptive nominee” label, Biden and Trump solidified their positions as the leading candidates for their respective parties.

As the evening progressed, some races remained too close to call, drawing attention and anticipation from voters. The race for the Democratic Party’s nominee for Cook County State’s Attorney became a focal point after incumbent Kim Foxx announced last year that she would not seek reelection. Voters now face the decision between Clayton Harris III and retired Appellate Court Judge Eileen O’Neill Burke in selecting Foxx’s replacement.

Another significant issue on the ballot was Chicago’s proposed real estate transfer tax, also known as the “mansion tax” or “Bring Chicago Home.” The proposal, if passed, would introduce a progressive structure for property sales, with the revenue generated aimed at combating homelessness in the city.

Additionally, the Republican Congressional race in Illinois’ 12th district pitted incumbent Rep. Mike Bost against former Illinois gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey. With notable endorsements and a focus on key issues like the Second Amendment, abortion access, energy independence, and border security, the race captured the attention of voters across the district. The election marked a significant challenge for Bost, who had not faced a primary opponent since 2018.

As the night unfolded, the Illinois primary election showcased a mix of decisive victories, tight races, and pivotal issues that will shape the political landscape in the state moving forward.
