Lafayette, Louisiana – A woman from Louisiana defied all odds after being given less than a day to live by doctors over five years ago. Danielle Perea, 24, recently shared her remarkable journey of survival with CBS News. She recalled the harrowing moment when she was diagnosed with a blood clot in one of the vessels carrying blood from her small intestines, which led to vomiting blood and a grim prognosis of imminent death.
Facing the dire situation, Perea underwent a successful transplant after spending a year and a half relying on IV-administered nutrition. The surgery, lasting 10 hours, addressed her mesenteric ischemia, a condition involving dead tissue in the small intestines. Dr. Kareem Abu-Elmagd from the Cleveland Clinic led the medical team that replaced Perea’s small intestine, marking a turning point in her journey to recovery.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including the need for a breathing tube and navigating the complexities of finding a suitable organ donor during the pandemic, Perea’s transplant was ultimately a success. Following the surgery, she remained in a hospital room for several months, battling frequent fevers.
After undergoing additional procedures and surgeries to repair and stabilize her health, Perea was able to marry her longtime partner, Luis, in November of last year in Lafayette, her hometown. She also completed her degree as a clinical lab science student and started working as a medical technologist.
Despite the lingering challenges of taking around 40 pills a day and the possibility of needing a kidney transplant in the future, Perea remains optimistic about her future. She embraces a life without restrictions, savoring each moment with her husband and looking forward to a long, healthy life ahead.
