Intoxicated Driver Charged with Murder After Tragic Crash at Child’s Birthday Party, Shocking Details Emerge

Berlin Charter Township, Michigan – An intoxicated driver has been charged with murder after crashing into a building where a child’s birthday party was taking place, resulting in the tragic deaths of two young siblings. The driver, identified as 66-year-old Marshella Chidester, collided with the Swan Boat Club in Berlin Charter Township on Saturday afternoon.

During an arraignment hearing on Tuesday, Chidester faced charges of second-degree murder, operating under the influence of alcohol causing death, and operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious injury. The bond was set at $1.5 million, with the possibility of a life sentence if convicted.

The victims, 5-year-old Zayn Phillips and his 8-year-old sister Alanah Phillips, were pronounced dead at the scene. It was later revealed that a third sibling sustained severe injuries in the crash, as confirmed by Andrew Brodie, the superintendent of Flat Rock Community Schools.

Chidester’s attorney claimed that she had a history of epileptic seizures, causing her to lose control of the vehicle during the incident. However, Monroe County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffery A. Yorkey disputed this, stating that Chidester’s blood alcohol level was well above the legal limit at the time of the crash.

Family members of the victims expressed their grief and outrage during the arraignment, with one grandmother accusing Chidester of making the deadly choice to drink and drive. The emotional impact of the tragedy was further highlighted by an aunt who recounted the devastating loss of her niece and nephew, as well as the injuries sustained by other family members.

In total, the crash left approximately 13 individuals injured, with nine requiring hospitalization. Five of those victims, including minors and adults, remain in critical condition following the incident. The devastating consequences of Chidester’s actions have reverberated through the community, leaving families grappling with unimaginable loss and trauma.

Chidester is scheduled to appear in court next on April 30, facing the repercussions of a senseless act that has shattered the lives of multiple families and shaken the local community to its core.
