Iranian-Made Weapons Seized: Pentagon Provides Ukraine with Kalashnikovs and More Amid Russian Onslaught

Washington, D.C. – The Pentagon has recently bolstered Ukraine’s military capabilities by providing them with thousands of Iranian-made weapons that were intercepted before reaching Houthi militants in Yemen. This decision marks the latest effort by the Biden administration to offer emergency military support to Kyiv, while a significant aid package remains stalled in the Republican-controlled House.

Among the arsenal of weapons sent to Ukraine are 5,000 Kalashnikov rifles, machine guns, sniper rifles, and rocket-propelled grenades, along with half a million rounds of ammunition. These weapons, which were seized from “stateless vessels” between 2021 and 2023, were made available for transfer to Ukraine through a Justice Department civil forfeiture program aimed at Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, according to U.S. Central Command.

The Iranian-made weapons were intended for the Houthi rebels, who have been carrying out prolonged assaults on both commercial and military vessels in the region off the Arabian Peninsula. The cache supplied to Ukraine is substantial enough to equip an entire Ukrainian brigade, typically comprising a few thousand soldiers.

Notably, the inventory list does not include critical artillery ammunition or air defense weapons, which are identified as urgent battlefield requirements for Ukraine. Due to shortages of these essential resources, Ukrainian military commanders have been compelled to ration them, leaving both troops and civilians vulnerable to attacks from Russian forces.

In the midst of the escalating conflict in Ukraine, where Russian forces are intensifying their advances and employing devastating glide bombs, President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized the urgent need for military support to avoid giving ground to the aggressors. Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson has yet to schedule a vote on a Senate-approved national security package that includes aid for Ukraine, as well as other critical national security priorities.

As the situation on the ground grows increasingly dire, with Ukrainian troops facing dwindling ammunition stocks and mounting pressure from Russian forces, the need for sustained support from the United States becomes more evident. Ukrainian military officials have underscored the significance of ongoing assistance to maintain their defensive efforts and prevent further territorial losses to Russian forces.

Despite the challenges faced by Ukraine, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has made it clear that the Ukrainian military needs additional American weaponry to sustain their resistance against Russian aggression. As Washington and other European nations reassess their own security risks in assisting Ukraine, the importance of continued support for Kyiv remains a critical focus for policymakers and military leaders.
