LA Sheriff’s Deputy dead after training accident

LOS ANGELES, CA – A deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, who was critically injured in a mobile shooting range fire last October, has succumbed to his injuries, according to his legal representative.

Deputy Alfredo “Freddy” Flores, who had been battling for his life for months, passed away on Saturday night, as confirmed by Joe A. Nunez, the attorney representing the Flores family.

“Freddy was a remarkable individual who courageously battled for his life after sustaining serious injuries while on duty,” said Nunez. “He was an exemplary husband, father, son, and brother who devoted his life to serving and protecting our community through his work with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.”

The tragic incident took place on October 10, 2023, during a training exercise at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, a part of the North County Correctional Facility. The fire, according to the attorney’s statement on behalf of the Flores family, was caused by an equipment malfunction during a training drill.

Nunez stated, “Despite the inherent risks associated with law enforcement, nothing could have prepared us for the sudden loss of Freddy due to injuries from an equipment malfunction during a training drill. His departure is a devastating blow, and we are struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy.”

In a statement released late Sunday morning, L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna expressed his devastation at the loss of a well-respected deputy who had served at the North County Correctional Facility, the Altadena sheriff’s station, and Court Services West Bureau during his 22-year tenure with LASD.

Sheriff Luna said, “Flores was highly regarded within the department and the community. His passing leaves a significant void in the hearts of many who knew him. We mourn the loss of a valued member of our department who served his community with dedication and pride for 22 years.”

In the aftermath of Flores’ death, the LASD’s Psychological Services Bureau is offering support and resources to his family, officials confirmed.
