Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – In a move to accelerate Malaysia’s digital transformation, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced a significant investment of $2.2 billion in artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure. This initiative aims to support the country’s tech advancement, following similar commitments in Indonesia and Thailand.
Nadella emphasized Microsoft’s commitment to Malaysia’s AI development, outlining plans to establish an AI Centre of Excellence and provide education and training opportunities to 200,000 individuals within the Southeast Asian nation. The goal is to empower Malaysian businesses, communities, and developers to leverage cutting-edge technology for inclusive economic growth and innovation.
Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, Zafrul Abdul Aziz, expressed pride in the deep partnership with Microsoft, stating that the country’s tech investment appeal is on the rise due to its robust semiconductor ecosystem. The collaboration with Microsoft will enhance Malaysia’s digital capabilities, positioning it more prominently in the global tech landscape and creating opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and higher-paying jobs.
Earlier announcements in Indonesia and Thailand highlighted Microsoft’s strategic focus on AI and cloud services investment globally. With predictions from global consulting firm Kearney estimating that AI could significantly boost Southeast Asia’s GDP by 2030, Microsoft’s efforts align with the region’s potential for growth and innovation.
Beyond Southeast Asia, Microsoft’s commitment to AI development extends to various countries, including recent investments in Japan and collaboration with the United Arab Emirates-based AI firm G42.
