In a recent episode of “The View,” Goldberg addressed the criticism, asking, “Why do you care what she calls herself? If she wanted to call herself Jeanette McDonald, she has the right to! If I can be Whoopi Goldberg, she can be whoever the hell she wants to be!”
Goldberg’s backing of Malia’s decision comes from her own experience. The comedian initially used her stage name to build her career, stating in a 1997 interview that she chose “Whoopi” after a whoopee cushion.
Joy Behar, Goldberg’s co-host, also weighed in on the discussion, acknowledging that Malia’s last name, Obama, carries positive connotations.
