Four juveniles were arrested after the crash near 8 Mile Road and Schoenherr Road.
WARREN, MI — A 48-year-old Detroit man was killed early Thursday when a police chase that began in Warren ended in a crash near the Warren-Detroit border, where four juveniles were arrested, police said.
The crash has drawn attention because it killed an uninvolved driver during a pursuit tied to a suspected stolen vehicle and a recent string of vehicle crimes. Warren police said officers tried to stop a silver Dodge Ram after seeing several people inside wearing ski masks. The case now involves patrol officers, detectives and crash reconstruction investigators.
Police said the pursuit began around 2 a.m. Thursday near Fairfield and Georgiana streets in Warren. Officers on patrol tried to stop the Dodge Ram after noticing suspicious activity in a neighborhood. The driver did not stop and headed south on Schoenherr Road toward 8 Mile Road. At the intersection of 8 Mile and Schoenherr, police said, the driver ran a red light and hit a vehicle traveling west on 8 Mile Road. The man in that vehicle was later identified by family as Remeious Washington of Detroit. His family said he was only minutes from home when he was struck.
After the crash, police said five people got out of the Dodge Ram and ran from the scene. Officers arrested four of them, all juveniles. Authorities had not released their names or ages as of Thursday evening. Police said the Detroit Fire Department took Washington to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators have not said whether anyone else was injured. Police also have not announced charges. The status of the fifth person who ran from the truck was not clear in the first reports released after the crash.
Warren police said investigators believe the juveniles may be connected to at least 15 vehicle-related crimes in Warren over the previous 48 hours. Those cases include thefts and attempted thefts, police said. The pursuit began after officers saw the people in the Dodge Ram wearing ski masks, a detail police said raised concern as the vehicle moved through neighborhood streets. The crash happened at one of the busiest border intersections between Warren and Detroit, where 8 Mile Road carries traffic across city lines and Schoenherr Road runs north and south through residential and commercial areas.
The Warren Police Department Detective Bureau and the department’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit are investigating the fatal crash and the pursuit. Their work is expected to include the path of the Dodge Ram, the timing of the attempted traffic stop, the speed of the vehicles and the signal at the intersection. Police also are reviewing the suspected link between the juveniles and the reported vehicle crimes. No court dates had been announced Thursday, and police had not said whether prosecutors had received warrant requests.
Washington’s relatives described him as a steady and loving presence in the family. Khadijah Caldwell, one of his sisters, said, “He was the muscle. The strong. You know, the heartbeat of all of us.” Another sister, Shay Washington, said he was “lovable” and often smiling. Family members also questioned how the chase unfolded and why it continued toward a busy intersection. Caldwell said the family wants the juveniles held responsible, but also wants answers from the people sworn to protect the public.
The intersection of 8 Mile Road and Schoenherr Road reopened after the crash investigation at the scene. As of Thursday evening, the case remained active, with police still working to complete crash reconstruction findings and determine what charges may follow.
