Man shoots home intruder to death

CARMICHAEL, CA – Sacramento County deputies reported that an unidentified man was shot and killed inside an apartment in Carmichael, California, over the weekend. The man who claimed to have shot the intruder is presently not facing any charges.

According to police, the incident took place at the Sutter Crossing Apartments. First responders received a call from a man stating that another man had entered his bedroom and assaulted him while he slept. The caller allegedly grabbed a firearm and shot the intruder.

Sergeant Amar Gandhi from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office shared that the caller’s girlfriend identified the intruder as her ex-boyfriend. Upon arrival, deputies found the ex-boyfriend dead at the scene. “New boyfriend had a gun, legally obtained, registered to him, and actually shot the ex-boyfriend,” revealed Sergeant Gandhi. Under California law, an individual is allowed ‘to stand your ground,’, and the law offers increased protections for acts of self-defense that occur within one’s home.

Gandhi further noted that the couple was fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made as investigators confirmed the shooting incident was a case of self-defense.

While the gun used in the shooting was legally registered to the shooter, Michael Wise, a local attorney, stated that even if the weapon had been illegally obtained, the use of deadly force would still be justified in a self-defense case.

The local authorities have yet to share any details regarding possible past violent incidents involving the ex-boyfriend.
