Man Shot Confronting Suspected Vehicle Thieves

Police said two suspects fled after the shooting inside an apartment garage early Sunday, and no arrests have been announced.

BROOKLYN PARK, MN — A man was shot early Sunday after interrupting a suspected theft from his vehicle inside an apartment garage in Brooklyn Park, police said. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Brooklyn Park police said officers were dispatched at about 12:56 a.m. Oct. 25 to the 6200 block of Louisiana Avenue North after receiving a report of a shooting. Before officers arrived, the injured man began driving himself toward a hospital. A Robbinsdale police officer later located him, according to authorities.

The man told investigators that he encountered a person who appeared to be stealing from his vehicle in the apartment building’s garage. He confronted that person, and a second suspect then shot him, police said. Authorities have not released the victim’s name or further information about his injuries.

Both suspects fled before Brooklyn Park officers reached the apartment complex. Police said they had little descriptive information about the pair, and no arrests had been announced as of Sunday.

Officers found evidence that a shooting had taken place inside the garage, according to police. Investigators also found several other vehicles that appeared to have been tampered with, indicating the suspects may have targeted more than one vehicle at the complex.

A police K-9 team searched the surrounding area in an effort to locate the suspects but did not find them. Officers from New Hope, Crystal and Robbinsdale also assisted Brooklyn Park police during the response.

Police have not said whether investigators recovered a firearm, surveillance video or other evidence that could identify the suspects. Authorities also have not released additional details about what was taken, if anything, from the victim’s vehicle or the other vehicles that appeared to have been disturbed.

The shooting remained under investigation Sunday. Brooklyn Park police said anyone with information can submit a tip by texting BPPD followed by the information to 847411. No suspect identities or arrests had been announced.
