“Manhunt” Kenneth DeHart, who fatally shot a deputy and injured another, is on the run and considered “armed and dangerous” in Tennessee.

MARYVILLE, Tennessee – Authorities are on the lookout for a Tennessee man suspected of killing a deputy and injuring another during a traffic stop. The suspect, Kenneth DeHart, is considered to be armed and dangerous. Warrants have been issued for his arrest for several serious charges including first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

The shooting occurred on Thursday evening when deputies attempted to pull over an SUV on Sevierville Road in Maryville. DeHart refused to cooperate with the deputies, and when they attempted to use a stun gun, it had no effect. DeHart then produced a gun and fired shots, hitting both deputies.

Deputy Greg McCowan was tragically killed in the shooting, while Deputy Shelby Eggers was struck in the leg but is expected to recover. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case and is actively pursuing DeHart.

Sheriff James L. Berrong expressed his deep distress at the loss of Deputy McCowan, describing it as the hardest thing he’s ever had to do. He assured the public that every effort will be made to capture DeHart and bring him to justice.

McCowan had only joined the sheriff’s office in 2020, but he was known as a friendly and cheerful member of the team. Eggers, who had joined the sheriff’s office in 2019, is now recovering at home. Authorities are offering a substantial reward for any information leading to DeHart’s arrest, and the community is asked to remain vigilant.

As the manhunt continues, the sheriff’s office is urging residents in the Wildwood area to check outdoor security and doorbell cameras for any footage that could help in locating DeHart. They are also asking anyone with information about DeHart’s whereabouts to come forward and assist in the investigation.
