Marathon Champion’s Victory Under Investigation After Suspicious Finish in Beijing

Hong Kong – Chinese runner He Jie’s recent victory in the Beijing Half Marathon has sparked controversy as Chinese internet users have raised questions about the legitimacy of his win. The race held in Beijing saw He Jie crossing the finish line first amidst a peculiar gesture from a trio of African runners.

A video clip circulating online shows Kenyan runner Willy Mnangat seemingly slowing down towards the end of the race, allowing He Jie to take the lead. Following Mnangat’s actions, former 5km world record-holder Robert Keter of Kenya appeared to signal for He Jie to overtake the pack, with another Kenyan and Ethiopian runner hanging back.

He Jie completed the race with a time of 1:03:44, securing the $5,500 first prize, with the African trio finishing just one second behind in joint-second place. The video clip captures the African runners congratulating He Jie on his win, despite the runner himself appearing less enthusiastic about his victory.

The unusual finish to the race has prompted calls from Chinese internet users for an investigation into the event, with some demanding action from organizers to ensure fairness in sports. The Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau and Chinese Athletics Association have acknowledged the concerns and are currently conducting an investigation into the matter.

World Athletics, the sport’s international governing body, has also stated its awareness of the situation and confirmed that local authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding He Jie’s victory. Observers have remarked on the questionable finish, with some noting that the race did not seem to end in the typical spirit of sportsmanship.

He Jie, a promising long-distance runner hailing from northwest China’s Ningxia region, has a strong track record in marathons and is considered a key figure in Asian running. Despite the controversy surrounding his recent win, He Jie remains a respected athlete within the running community and is expected to continue representing China on the international stage.
