Mass shooting in New Orleans leaves 1 dead, 11 shot

NEW ORLEANS, LA – In a late-night mass shooting in the Warehouse District, one woman was fatally shot, and eleven other individuals suffered gunshot wounds, according to New Orleans Police Department. The authorities received a distress call just before midnight, drawing them to the 800 block of South Peters Street, near the nightclub, Republic NOLA.

Upon their arrival, police officers discovered one woman dead on the spot and several others injured by gunshots. The injured encompassed five men and six women.

Emergency medical services transported some of the victims to a local hospital, while others arrived in private vehicles. The incident’s pulsating aftermath took place entirely outside, according to Nick Thomas, the owner of Republic NOLA. Thomas declined to comment further on the situation.

The night of the shooting coincides with a performance by hip-hop artist, Anycia, at Republic, as informed by Eventbrite. Hotel resident and witness Kelsey Holt reported the shocking sequence of terror as 30 to 40 people came rushing out of the club. Scenes of many running down the street, some staying by the building, were followed by the sight of a woman lying motionless on the ground, surrounded by other people giving assistance.

An anonymous witness identified the deceased as a 24-year-old woman, Jezreel. The witness applauded her warm nature and her ever-smiling face. She also shared the witnesses’ account of the shooting, which churned chaos and panic. The horrifying sight of injured people and streaks of blood stressed her, making her see the city safety in another light.

A resident man, who wished to remain anonymous, conveyed his non-surprise over the incident, indicating its repetitiveness over time. He claimed it to be at least the third shooting in the same block in two years and pointed out the pattern of fights and shootings in the area.

The city has its share of previous mass shooting incidents in 2019 and 2018, affecting multiple innocent bystanders. To address the mass shooting and discuss certain other cases, the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) will conduct a press conference at its headquarters on Monday at 4 p.m. NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick, and the city Mayor, LaToya Cantrell, along with other city officials will attend.

Investigation into the latest incident is still underway, with police holding back further details for now.
