Matteson, Illinois – A train derailed in the far south suburban area of Matteson on Thursday morning, prompting officials to respond to the scene. Approximately 25 train cars were reported to have derailed at around 10:30 a.m. along Main Street.
According to Matteson fire officials, the train involved in the derailment belongs to the Canadian National Railway Company. While there were no immediate reports of injuries, authorities examined a leaking train car to assess any potential hazards.
A white powdery substance observed leaking from one of the train cars was tested by CN, confirming that it was not deemed hazardous. The substance was later identified as plastic pellets by a fire official. Additionally, a railcar containing residue Liquified Petroleum Gas reportedly leaked a small amount, but CN assured that it was contained with no threat to public safety.
Residents in the surrounding area were temporarily asked to evacuate as a precautionary measure, but were allowed to return home after the situation was deemed under control. Main Street between 218th Street and 217th Street remained closed as crews worked to clear the area.
The Metra Electric inbound and outbound train services from Chicago to University Park were briefly impacted by the derailment, but were later given the all-clear to resume normal operations. Despite the disruption, no immediate danger to the public was reported, and officials urged individuals to avoid the area to allow for a safe and efficient cleanup process.
