NEW YORK, NY – The Met Gala, known as the year’s most prominent fashion event, will take on a garden theme at this year’s gathering. Vogue revealed that the 2024 gala, scheduled for May 6th, will coincide with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibit, with the dress code for the evening being “The Garden of Time.”
The co-chairs for the evening include Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth. Notably, this marks Hemsworth’s first time at the ball, while the other co-chairs have attended in the past. The inspiration for “The Garden of Time” theme comes from J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same title.
The announcement was made on the Vogue’s social channels, with a video documenting text messages Anna Wintour sent to the co-chairs asking if they would be available on May 6th. Hemsworth post on Instagram, “Anyone got a Garden of Time outfit I can borrow,” alongside the text message chain.
The Met Gala, which always takes place on the first Monday of May, is considered a significant night for both the fashion and Hollywood industries. Last year’s co-chairs included Penélope Cruz, Dua Lipa, Roger Federer, and Michaela Coel, with the event celebrating the “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” exhibit with a dress code “in honor of Karl.”
This year’s “Sleeping Beauties” exhibit will showcase approximately 250 items spanning 400 years from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection, with the exhibition being shaped around three main “zones” – Land, Sea, and Sky. As for the performances at the gala, they are not usually announced ahead of time, with Lizzo being last year’s surprise performer.
