Missing 5-year-old found safe, father arrested for mother’s murder

PRINCETON, KY – Authorities in Kentucky reported the safe location of a five-year-old girl, Lela Black, following an Amber Alert issued upon her disappearance. The girl was discovered less than a day after an announcement by the Kentucky State Police declaring her missing.

Lela was found in the company of her biological father, Byron Black, 42. The young girl’s dad has been arrested in association with the murder of her mother, Kelly Black, also 42.

Kelly Black was discovered dead at her Princeton, Kentucky, home on Sunday when local law enforcement authorities went to conduct a wellness check, according to an official police statement. They identified Kelly as the murder victim, setting off an investigation that led to an arrest warrant issued for her husband, Byron.

Before the police arrived, Byron had already left the scene. A later investigation revealed Kelly had died from a gunshot wound to the back of her head.

In the original Amber Alert shared on the Kentucky State Police’s official Facebook page, it was speculated that Lela was with her father, thought to be “armed and dangerous.” Prior to the issuance of the Amber Alert, it was reported that Byron and Lela had not been in contact since January 26.
